This week, India swore in their second Woman President in the countries history. While the Indian Prime Minister is the closer equivalent to the United States President, we should remember that India has also had a woman PM.

So it is even more notable that President Droupadi Murmu is the first President from the ‘Scheduled Tribes’ group of India. She is from a group known as ‘Dalit’ which can be also referred to as untouchables. This group has experienced millenia of discrimination in India so it is incredibly important that one of them is now President.

Prior to being elected President, Droupadi Murmu was Governor of Jharkhand. She is a former educator and a graduate of a woman’s college.

Congratulations Madam President.
