As part of the ongoing Sheroes Portrait series, people often make suggestions of who I should paint. What I love about this is that it opens the doors for me to learn more and more about amazing women, and it keeps expanding my knowledge about the extraordinary contributions to society that women give.
I confess to not knowing much about Karen Bass when she was suggested as a subject for me to paint. I wasn’t particularly familiar with her though as she’s from LA. So as I began to research her I was more and more impressed. Her lifetime of contributions to her community, her party and her country are too many to even be able to begin to enumerate. I highly encourage you to read more about her, I guarantee you will be as impressed as I am.
Karen Bass was elected to the California state legislature when there were zero Black women serving, she was the first African American woman to be Speaker of a State House and is currently the Chair of the CBC and she serves also as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations and the House Committee on the Judiciary where she serves as Acting Chair of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.
