Chloé Zhao (Zhào Tíng) became the first Woman of Color to win an Oscar for Best Director and only the second woman ever to win the award. Nomadland also won for Best Picture and Best Actress.

How the entertainment industry treats women informs a large part of how our society views women. When you break down the statistics on how women are treated in film it becomes easy to see why our society does not equate women to the same level as men. More than half of all movies nominated for the best picture Oscar don’t even pass the Bechdel test...and that’s just for starters.

How do we change society? We change the arts and education. Zhao went to my Alma mater, Mount Holyoke College, one of the oldest historically Women’s colleges in America. It makes a difference. A big one.
